Okay, science (and blueprint) nerds – this project is for you! I made an Eames-inspired molecule sculpture for my java table recently and but had to share.

Supplies to Make an Eames-Inspired Molecule Sculpture

  • wood round beads (ane inch in diameter or larger)
  • forest dowel rod (iii/16 inch in diameter or larger)
  • forest or craft mucilage
  • hand saw or similar (I always use this)
  • sandpaper
  • drill and drill fleck
  • clamp on bench vise (like this)
  • (optional) acrylic paint and paint brush

How to Brand an Eames-Inspired Molecule Sculpture

1. First past drilling holes into wood circular beads, using a clamp on demote vise for safety. As shown in photo. Brand sure the drill bit you select while drilling in the aforementioned size as the bore of your dowel rod. Then, if you accept a 3/16 inch diameter dowel rod, you'd use a 3/16 drill bit, etc.

Note: You'll want to drill holes at various angles (and multiple holes in some of the chaplet) so you have lots of options for your molecule sculpture when putting it together later.

ii. Then, cut down the wood dowel rod to smaller pieces (anywhere from two.five-3 inches long is a practiced identify to start), using a hand saw or similar.

3. Use sandpaper to soften whatsoever edges or issues with the drilling and cutting from steps 1 and 2.

four. This is a good time to paint the beads or dowels, if you decide you want to go that route. I went with several shades of blue for the beads and left the dowels unpainted. Look for the paint to dry earlier moving on to the next footstep.

5. Then, your molecule sculpture is gear up to assemble. It took a little while to state on a design I liked, so play around with this until you find a skillful i you like (and the right size) for your space. All yous do to assemble is add together the dowel pieces into the holes of the wood beads until you've create a design you like.

You tin besides look at actual molecule models to mimic something in particular if you want. Just google it and you lot'll find a bunch of options.

6. One time you lot've decided on a design, yous'll probable want to gum all the pieces together so information technology doesn't come up undone. So, using wood or arts and crafts glue, add a piffling to the ends of the dowel rod pieces and insert into the bead holes. Wipe any backlog gum and expect for it to dry out fully according to label before using. That'due south it!

I'g using mine in the living room, as a coffee tabular array ornament, simply this would be a cool slice for a desk-bound or fifty-fifty a kids room likewise (make sure those pieces are glued though if it's for a kiddo, and then there are no swallowing hazards).
